AN HORIZON OF WINTER

As the last sun of autumn sets in the west

The bird tests its wings to leave the summer nest.

The white glow of the winter moon shines bright.

Stomachs full and feathers cleaned for inter-continental  flight.

The last leaves drop to shed the branches bare.

Last chance for them, squirrel, rabbit, mouse and hare.

As warmth subsides, there’s a biting wind, some find it harsh.

Soon the frost will visit mountain, wood, meadow and marsh.

As darkness falls each plant grabs that last glimmer of light.

The ice and snow will soon be here to shine, silver and white.
